About
Sarah Verroken (born 1982) graduated in 2006 as a Master of Fine Arts at Sint-Lukas Brussels, specializing in Illustration and Graphic Design. With her final school project, she won the Key Colors Award, which immediately resulted in her first publication. Feeling Sad (Dutch title: BOOS) was eventually published in eight different countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, China, South Korea and Japan) and won the Plantin Moretus Award for the best designed book in 2008. It also received nominations for the Boekenpauw and the Children’s and Youth Jury.
In 2007, Sarah moved to New Zealand for a few years, where she drew Pigeon and Pigeonette, a picture book inspired by a (rather clumsy) New Zealand wood pigeon. The story was written by her husband Dirk Derom and published in the United States in 2009 by Enchanted Lion Books, New York.
In 2011, the book Jakob en Jakoba, with text by Siska Goeminne, was published in Belgium by De Eenhoorn and later in China.
The focus of her activities shifted more and more towards graphic design and teaching at the Brussels RHoK Academy and her career eventually took a turn towards her passion for clinical psychology and the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. However, pencil and paper are never far away and many projects await patiently until the time is right.
